Is there much to do inside or will the event be pretty much washed out if it rains? I assume a number of rides close down in bad weather. Are food and drink locations inside or outside? In short, what's the rain plan?

MEC (MS Exchange/Enterprise Conference) History

6/13/2012 8:55 PM by first LAST Created by: Sid Broach.
I posted a comment in the TechEd history thread, but want to open it up to a wider response field (all of you!). I am seeking infiormation on the relatively unsung branching off of TechEd into TechEd (the Dev only conference) and MEC (the rst of us) for a few years in the early 2000s. If anyone remembers and has dates, locations, etc, please post here, so we can gather that information together. If it is comprehensive enough, I'll try to post it out on Wikipedia (as TechEd history is now). Below is my original post: Who remembers the great split-off in MS TechEd conferences when the Microsoft MEC's were first held (first standing for Microsoft Exchange Conference, then later Microsoft Enterprise Conference)? The first MEC I remember was held around 2000/2001, I believe. Many years later (was it around 2007/2008?) the MECs were ended, but for a year or so the TechEd was held in two parts, one week for Developers only, and the following week for Infrastructure folks. THAT turned out to be VERY unpopular with the attendees (we're a smart bunch, and like to visit accross artificial boundaries, it seems) and only lasted for maybe one year, after which everything went back to the annual (combined) TechEd we first knew years before that 'split', and has continued since then as it is structured today. I am a little fuzzy on details, but would REALLY like to collect some of those details for my records. I was there, but the memories just aren't as clear as I would like. Does anybody have a better memory than I? I found one of those MEC badges, and I am considering a great(!?) treasure hunt through my 'stuff' for more (as soon as I find some slack time!!) Can anyone help with their memories?

Meet TechEd Pre-Con Speaker Johan Arwidmark
6/13/2012 8:28 PM by Rolf Penzel
6/13/2012 8:28 PM by Rolf Penzel Created by: Brandy Pepper.

Over the past few weeks, I've been sending interview questionnaires to our Pre-Conference Seminar speakers - experts I know you'll enjoy learning more about, professionally and personally. My goal is to highlight the amazing talent speaking at TechEd as well as help you establish a connection with the speakers prior to June.

Today's Speaker Highlight features Johan Arwidmark, Chief Technical Architect at Knowledge Factory and alumni of more than 15 TechEd conferences in North America and Europe, presenting PRC04 User-Centric Application Delivery Rocks the World: Using Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2012.

We asked...

What's your favorite TechEd memory or what are you most excited about for this year?
My favorite TechEd memory would be the Deployment Jeopardy Session, which was a contest (disguised as a breakout session) that was held at TechEd Europe and US in 2010 and 2011 (if memory serves well). It was a full hour of jeopardy questions, targeted to Windows Deployment, and the host was Jeremy Chapman (dressed in a t-shirt tuxedo). We were six contestants with the three Jeopardy podiums and buttons to press.

I made it to the finals most times, but somehow I always lost on the final question to Michael Niehaus (Microsoft). The oddest question I ever got was a "surprise question" among all the technology questions; Jeremy asked us to name one song by Justin Bieber. Not a single of us contestants knew that one... Finally we heard someone in the audience screaming "BABY", so I had to check with my kids when I got home, and it turned out they knew it pretty well (I have two girls; 11 and 15 at the time).

Here's a recording from TechEd Europe 2010, if you want to check it out.

Who would you like to meet at TechEd?
Mark Minasi, great guy, and fun to talk with.

What's your favorite technology you use on a daily basis?
Configuration Manager 2007/2012

Put your visionary hat on, what do you think will be the hottest technology (device, game, trend etc.) in 2017?
SuperUltrabooks: Superthin, superlight, touch displays, powerful as ten of today's servers, with a 30 hours battery life.

Do you have any geeky hobbies you'd care to share?
I love playing StarCraft 2 on my PC, and I have completed all Achievements in the Liberty Campaign... And, strange as it may sound, I'm a pretty good dancer (a form of boogie woogie type of dance called "bugg" in Swedish).

Do you have additional questions for Johan about his experience or upcoming Pre-Conference Seminar? Go ahead and post your comments here, and keep an eye out for more Speaker Highlights coming in the days to follow...

lines for the Men's room

OK - At the risk of getting myelf hung in effigy at the WIT luncheon Tuesday, I have a suggestion for the TechEd staff (tongue firmly in cheek). In recognition of the relative proportion of men to women at TechEd, I suggest that approximately 25% of the Women's restrooms be re-labeled as Men's restrooms for the remainder of the week. My intent is not to complain about the lines for the Men's rooms, but simply a logical adaptation to the proportion of male to female attendees this week. And in anticipation of the women that are thinking 'Now you know what we go through', I'd argue that I don't. I've frequently been at events at which women, after looking at long lines for the Women's restrooms, march right into the Men's room. I don't think many men would risk the likely trouble as a result of walking into the Women's room! OK ladies - let me have it. Tell me how wrong I am - I can take it.

Farewell to TechEd
6/24/2012 1:40 AM by Moshe Raab
6/24/2012 1:40 AM by Moshe Raab Created by: Moshe Raab.
I am an independent contractor/developer. By count of familiar looking bags and backpacks, I have attended about 15 of the 20 TechEds so far. I fear that this was my last. TechEd was something that I always looked forward to. When one was over I would mark my calendar and count down the months, weeks and days until the next. I enjoyed sitting in the sessions, drinking from the fire hose as it has often been described. I enjoyed visiting the various Microsoft booths speaking to people about technology in general, methodology and languages. I was always impressed by the number of Microsoft technical people that were there. I was always amused by the diversity and quantity of the SWAG that I would go home with. Over the years, TechEd has evolved. I have seen the developer focus gradually recede. A few years ago they tried splitting the IT and developer tracks into separate tracks. This year, however, I felt out of place. I could hardly find any vendors that caught my interest as a developer. Even Microsoft did not have much. Yes there was Visual Studio, but where was MSDN? Where were the booths that showed SharePoint development? Dynamics? Windows Phone (7 or 8)? BizSpark? To add insult to injury, Microsoft made major announcements about Surface and Windows Phone 8 just days after the conference. I paid my own way but most attendees were set by their companies. I know I feel that Microsoft deprived me of an opportunity to hear about and see the new products in person. I am sure other companies feel the same way. If Microsoft had made these announcements before or during TechEd and given us the opportunity to return to our offices and clients with this extra knowledge and experience, we all (included Microsoft) would have benefitted. I imagine that Microsoft would prefer that I attend BUILD instead of TechEd. So, alas, this will probably be my last.

PRC01 - Building Federated External Access for Microsoft SharePoint 2010
10/1/2012 6:05 AM by krishvandam VISH
10/1/2012 6:05 AM by krishvandam VISH Created by: myTechEd Admin.
Managing authentication and authorization for external users has always been a challenge. You may have read great things about federation, Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS), claims, and SAML authentication for SharePoint—but what is the reality? Come learn the best practices for deploying an enterprise-ready federated environment from John Craddock, federation and security architect. John is currently engaged by a major global corporation on a federated design for SharePoint using a combination of UAG, ADFS, SharePoint 2010 and a third-party IdP. The seminar begins with a quick introduction to federation and ADFS and then gets down to the real details of designing and implementing the system. The day is packed with demos. You will not only discover what works, but also some of the things that don’t work, although maybe they should!

9/8/2012 3:18 AM by Scott Bollinger Created by: myTechEd Admin.
Only 10?! Security audits are the best opportunity to become familiar with the common and uncommon security mistakes made by administrators. The reasons of misconfiguration are very typical: lack of time, lack of monitoring systems, lack of knowledge. Often, common mistakes are very serious and can lead to some serious security breaches. Nobody likes when the passwords of your users are being cracked, right? Nobody likes to see this in the audit report. During this intensive and very technical session, Paula shows you the commonly seen ‘infrastructure sins’. Of course there are more than 10…, but if you start to fulfill all of these shown on the session, your network will become significantly more secure!
